Green Universities in the US

Jan 25, 2024

Many of the top universities across the country are embracing sustainability and taking initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint. Many of the steps being taken by these universities can be made possible for you and your college or university with the help of EBI.

Many of the services EBI provides are steps these universities are taking to improve their energy efficiency:

  • Energy Audits
  • Energy Benchmarking
  • Green Building Certification
  • MEP Commissioning Services
  • ESG Strategic Advisory Services

UC Irvine

The University of California at Irvine has been setting the tone for energy efficient higher education for almost 15 years. Back in 2011, it pledged to improve building efficiencies by 20% by the year 2020. That goal was knocked out of the park by 2013. Retrofits for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems helped pave the way to improving building efficiencies on campus. In addition to improvements to MEP operation, the school has also prioritized delivering LEED certified buildings (link to green certs blog).

University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh has retrofitted several of its buildings to make energy efficiency improvements. The university has six LEED certified buildings and a number of its residence halls had MEP commissioning improvements done that included geothermal HVAC systems, more energy efficient windows, solar panels, and improved energy efficient lighting.

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland made conscious efforts to limit electrical energy waste by installing timers and sensors across its buildings. In addition, the school uses alternative energy sources like solar and wind to counter act over half of the school’s electricity usage.

Columbia University

Like many of the other universities on this list, Columbia University made MEP improvements resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings each year. The university made HVAC, plumbing, and lighting changes to limit energy waste and increase efficiency.

Stanford University

One of the main ways Stanford is pushing for energy efficiency is through MEP retrofitting its HVAC systems in buildings and dorms to reduce energy waste and increase energy efficiency. In addition, Stanford also implemented solar energy and other means of renewable energy.
