Quincy Public School Renovation

Apr 18, 2024

EBI provided professional design services under a master services agreement for the comprehensive interior renovation of Quincy Middle School’s 4,300 sq. ft. auditorium in Quincy, MA. Built in 1956, the middle school had remained largely unchanged despite significant flooding in 2016. Our team undertook structural, mechanical, and electrical design and construction administration services to facilitate the necessary renovations.

Due to the conditions of the auditorium, a complete renovation was required. Our team managed the following renovations: removal and elevation of the plaster ceiling, preservation and refurbishment of the stage and stairs, modifications to walls and ceilings for improved acoustics and stage lighting, structural adjustments to support stage equipment, and installation of new HVAC units and control rooms.

Prior to demolition, our structural engineering experts conducted a thorough site assessment to evaluate the existing structure. We organized regular calls and design meetings with the architectural and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) teams, collaborating closely with the architects of record (AOR) to integrate structural requirements into the overall design. Throughout construction, our structural engineers provided oversight and coordination to ensure that structural elements were implemented according to specifications.

Our mechanical and electrical engineering professionals managed design development, construction documents, and construction administration for the project. This involved extending new ductwork from roof penetrations to distribute air within the space and developing innovative designs for lighting, fire alarm, and power systems. All systems were meticulously designed to comply with Massachusetts State Building Codes. Our mechanical and electrical team worked in tandem with the architects to address all mechanical and electrical needs, finalizing construction documents for permitting purposes.

Following demolition, our structural engineering team conducted a follow-up site visit to confirm the accuracy and relevance of initial assessments. We continued to collaborate with the AOR to ensure compliance with permitting requirements, ensuring a successful outcome for the project.
